When I think about personal development and what I’ve learned so far there’s quite a few things I’d like to talk about. Most of them are patterns of the things I liked the most or the things that takes my attention.

Basically when speaking about development it’s quite clear that I developed from being just a picture, video editor to someone who can design something. In my opinion, it’s a big step forward for me, because to be honest, I’m not good at drawing (I’m actually better at styling). I was doing ok though in school, but only because teacher used to let me draw with my fancy “Faber Castell” pencils and do some shadowing instead of painting with water paint. I have no idea why she let me do that though, because I’ve said it before and I will say it again, I’m not good at drawing, for now. But I won’t be focusing on this, I will be focusing on the things that I believe I’m actually good at or want to be good at.

So far from the things I’ve blogged about it is evident to me that I’m into metal band logos. They’re mostly typographic, but in a way that it looks like a drawing or uses both typography and an illustration. What I like the most about is that all of the metal sub-genres has quite a different style, but I love most of them, because I grew up listening to such music and I’ve seen so many of it and yet I can’t get enough of it. I’m planning to buy a tablet, but for now I don’t know which one to buy, but as soon as I will buy it, I will start creating such logos myself. I believe that there’s nothing more satisfying than doing actually what you love.

I liked doing poster for design practice module too. I’ve got some place to experiment and apply photography as a medium in my design work. I always loved to work with Photoshop and Lightroom so I could simulate pictures which won’t look as a picture anymore. I’m happy with the fact that I’m able to apply my photography skills and tools in my work, which makes it even more pleasant. Also, what I’ve noticed while I was doing my poster design, is that I’m into glitchy, distorted and rebellious looks in my work, for instance punk subculture fragments had been applied in some of my work when I was testing out possibilities. I believe it’s a pleasure to be able to apply something that I have interest in when it comes to designing my work, because it’s very satisfying and make everything even more interesting. This is one of the things I would like to do in future, because I want to associate my work with who I really I am. I guess it’s going to be a fun summer break when this term will end, as I’m planning to practice more or less everyday. I believe practise is important part of the development.

From my personal archive.

When it comes to the question how did I develop from the start of studies till now, I can definitely say I went from 0 to something slightly higher. I know my work isn’t perfect and I’m still learning, but I can definitely see how far I went already. For example I had no knowledge on how to use Illustrator at all, it’s felt like a deep forest for me where I can get easily lost. By the time it got easier, but still I’m not sure properly how pen tool works, even though I use other methods. But then again, this is something I’m planning to figure out.

Also I have learned and still learning how to make my design communicate with the audience. Looking back again at the poster design for design practice and the amount of tries to actually achieve the result I think it’s the most appropriate to approach the viewer. It is something I wasn’t able to find much about if looking for something specific, it is something I needed to figure out myself.
